After a thorough examination with our optometrist, we will review your options to determine the best way to treat your eyes – even if that means cataract surgery. It is our goal to make you feel comfortable during surgery, and we will do everything we can to make the process as easy on you as possible. We will refer you to a cataract surgeon and you will go through the whole procedure from consultation to the surgery day with ease. Nowadays, cataract surgery is quick, usually done at an outpatient center with same-day release.

We are also dedicated to the follow-up after surgery. We will ensure that you are recovering well and that your eyes are healing like they should. We are here for you every step of the way along with the Ophthalmologist office.

Here at Family Eyecare Experts we provide ongoing eye disease detection and management to help you keep seeing your world as clearly and completely as possible. We also work with many MDs and Pediatricians in the area to provide a report back for your overall complete wellness visit. If you need specialized care, we can also refer you to the appropriate practitioner.

Our eyes are vulnerable to a variety of diseases including diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, etc. Some of these are acute in nature, while others develop as chronic, sight-stealing conditions. Diabetics will often need to be more vigilant on managing their blood sugar. Medications can control most cases of macular degeneration and glaucoma, while corrective lenses can compensate for early-stage cataracts. The good news is that you can watch out for these diseases and manage chronic problems before they rob you of significant amounts of your vision.

The first step in eye disease management is early detection. Our optometrist can administer regular exams to catch the first signs of chronic eye disease. If we identify a problem, we will take immediate action to help you control it. In many cases you may need to implement lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet, smoking cessation, or UV protection.

In optometry, computer vision refers to the strain on your eyes from using a computer or a computerized device for hours throughout the day. As more careers require the extended use of computers, it is not surprising that it impacts the eyes. The light from the computer combined with the hours spent gazing at the screen cause eye strain and fatigue. Computer vision syndrome can occur in adults and children.

A key method of keeping your eyes healthy after being exposed to extended hours of computer light is with a regular check-ups and vision tests. To learn more about computer vision, please give us a call at (281) 849-4844 and ask us to provide details during your exam.

Signs of a Vision Concern
The signs of strain on your eyes from a computer, tablet, or phone may vary slightly. By clarifying the common signs, it is easier to identify when you may have a concern. Common symptoms of computer vision syndrome include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Pain in the shoulders and neck
  • General eye strain

Over time, you may notice changes to your vision. Regular eye strain may contribute to other eye conditions and it may change the way you see. You may develop nearsightedness or exacerbate the symptoms of your nearsightedness.

As technology in Optometry advances, more patients are able to enjoy the flexibility of wearing contact lenses to correct their vision. If you are interested in trying contact lenses, feel free to let us know during your routine eye exams. We include tests that are not always performed in regular vision exams; so if you are considering contact lenses, this will allow us to schedule the extra time required for a contact lens fitting or prescription updates. Scheduling your general eye exam and your contact lens exam for the same visit will save you time and money.

We carry a wide array of contact lenses. Our doctor will diligently help you choose the contact lens best suited for your lifestyle. We have contacts specifically designed for sports (golfing, tennis, etc.), multifocals (so you can get rid of those bifocals!), modified monovision (for people who can’t seem to adjust to mono vision or multifocals contacts), colored contact lenses, contacts for high astigmatism, and much more.

Ever wonder what the inside of your eye looks like? Now you can see what the Optometrist sees!

Both of our offices now offer high-resolution retinal photography, which uses a computer-integrated digital-imaging system to record a detailed view of the retina. Since nothing touches the eye, this procedure is painless and provides an excellent reference point for future comparisons. Furthermore, in most cases these digital images can be obtained without dilating the eye!

Once taken, these pictures can be immediately displayed and viewed by the patient and the doctor. We recommend that all of our patients receive this test. It is especially important for people with a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, retinal diseases, flashing lights, floaters, headaches, or a strong spectacle prescription. Retinal photography assists our eye doctors in the detection and management of problems such as:

  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Hypertensive Retinopathy
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Optic Nerve Diseases
  • Glaucoma
  • Retinal Holes and Tears
  • Retinal Tumors

OCT stands for ‘optical coherence tomography’, and the OCT machine is a useful, non-invasive, non-contact, imaging and biomicroscopic device that diagnoses various eye problems. It uses light waves to take cross-sectional retinal images in high-resolution. Our Optometrist can analyze the layers of the retina to gain insight into various biological tissues in real-time. Following the diagnosis, we can properly treat the condition and refer patient to the proper Ophthalmologist and MD to save time and hassle.

OCT can detect disease such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Hypertensive Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Macular degeneration and many more.

  • Diabetic retinopathy – Uncontrolled diabetes can damage the blood vessels of the retina, causing blood leakage that robs you of your vision.
  • Glaucoma – Occurs when the optic nerves that send visual data to the brain are damaged. The usual culprit is high pressure inside the due to poor fluid drainage. Symptoms, which may take years to develop, begin with peripheral vision loss, followed by total vision loss.
  • Macular degeneration – Another age-related ailment, macular degeneration, leads to blank spots or distortions in your central field of vision. This condition can eventually make you legally blind.

Here at Family Eyecare Experts, we are proud to offer dry eye treatment for our patients.

Dry eye syndrome (known medically as keratoconjunctivitis sicca) is a common condition among many people that is more serious than the condition implies. It affects young adults and the elderly alike. It is a problem that may become more prevalent in the near future, as more people use computers frequently and as contact lens usage and LASIK surgeries become more widespread.

The eye’s most superficial layer is not the cornea; it is actually the tear film. The tear film serves many functions in the human eye. It acts as a protective layer by washing dirt and other contaminants away. The tear film also keeps the cornea hydrated and clear, preventing the eye from drying out. Last, the tear film acts as a refractive medium, which contributes towards useful vision. Dry eye syndrome is caused by deficient tear production or abnormal tear production in the eye. If there are not enough tears on the tear film, or the quality of the tears is poor, then a person’s eye will quickly become symptomatic.

There are numerous treatment options available for people suffering from dry eye. Some are as simple as periodically using an artificial tear to help the eye maintain proper lubrication. Other treatment options include prescription drops, omega 3 supplements, and tear duct plugs. For proper treatment, you should see our optometrist for a comprehensive eye evaluation. A good eye exam will reveal if dry eyes are causing your problems, and if they are, your optometrist will help manage your dry eyes in an optimal manner.

Symptoms of Dry Eye
Symptoms of dry eyes include itchiness, scratchiness, and a foreign body sensation in the eyes. The eyes may feel gritty as well. In addition, intermittent visual blurriness and impairment is common; this is due to the abnormal tear film refracting light improperly (think of a car windshield that is not uniformly wet throughout its surface). Despite its name, dry eyes can also cause excessive tearing as well. This is due to the eyes reflexively making more tears to hydrate the eye. However, these reflexively-made tears are of poorer quality and evaporate quickly, causing a quick return to eye dryness. Eyes may also turn red and irritated as a result of dryness.

Some eye diseases, including medical conditions such as pinkeye, can be the result of acute bacterial or viral infections that usually resolve themselves without causing lasting damage. Other conditions, such as dry eyes, are actually syndromes (collections of related symptoms) rather than diseases in their own right.

We at Family Eyecare Experts also can treat and manage many red eyes and emergency eyecare needs. Please give us a call at (281)849-4844 and let us know what your eye emergency is to able to help and expedite the treatment.

There are times when you may need immediate care for your eyes. Any time that you experience trauma to your eyes, you need to be seen. If you get anything in your eye, especially chemicals and foreign objects, you should be seen immediately to limit the potential damage to the eye.

You should also come in immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Painful and/or red eyes
  • Inability to open the eyes
  • Swelling
  • Flashing lights (which may induce vomiting)

The sooner that you get treatment for your eyes, the quicker you can have relief and start to feel better. Early detection and treatment of problems can also help prevent serious damage to your eyes or vision.

There is no definition of what is or isn’t an emergency; if you feel that you should be seen for any reason, please give us a call right away. After hours, you should get to the nearest hospital for care or, if necessary, call 911.

At Family Eyecare Experts we offer comprehensive vision exams in Houston, TX, that cover all aspects of your sight & eye health. We know that your family’s health is important, but it’s hard to find the time; so are flexible with same day appointments and walk-ins are welcome.

We start with questions regarding your daily life and any symptoms you may be experiencing at home or at work. We also take record of your vision, medications, and overall health. Then our optometrists perform a visual exam to take a look at your eye and eyelids. This is done with magnification and light and may require dilating of the pupils. We also record your eye pressure with tonometry, which is an important test to identify patients at risk of developing glaucoma. After these tests, we review the results and discuss treatment options or corrective lens choices.

As children grow, their eye care needs change. They may not recognize that change immediately, and parents, teachers, and coaches may not realize it either. This is why annual eye exams are so important for children.

Children can encounter unique health issues that affect their vision. With today’s training and technology, we’re able to accurately diagnose small children while helping them feel comfortable during the exam. With the latest technology and knowledge in the field of eye care, our Optometrist offers exams and treatment for the challenges of childhood vision. From diagnosing a toddler who can’t verbalize a problem to reassuring a teen with great eye health, we help kids and parents alike take care of their vision to ensure it lasts for years to come. We’re also ready to help older children whose eyes are undergoing significant change through their teenage years.

Parents know that a child’s vision is essential for them to learn and grow. They may not be able to identify an underlying vision problem when after the child has adapted and compensated for the problem. Behavior problems, headaches, falling grades, accidents, and shy mannerisms often are the result of a child whose vision has become compromised.

At Family Eyecare Experts, we can help your child move beyond that. We’d like to help each child reach their greatest potential so that they can enjoy life to its fullest.

Are you tired of wearing glasses or fumbling with contact lenses? If so, then one great alternative for vision improvement is LASIK surgery, PRK surgery and IOL replacement. There are many options for refractive surgery today. We work with ophthalmologists to refer for your refractive surgery and also do co-management for pre-op and post-op surgery.

What is LASIK surgery? The term LASIK stands for Laser in Situ Keratomileusis, which describes the process of the surgery. In this surgery, your surgeon will use a highly-specialized laser to cut and work underneath a corneal flap (in situ) in order to reshape your cornea (keratomileusis) to improve natural vision. LASIK surgery can be used to correct a variety of vision issues, but is most commonly used to treat hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness), and astigmatism.

We carry sunglasses (polarized, nonpolarized) and glasses for men, women and children. There are plenty of affordable sunglasses in a range of prices that still offer proper eye protection. Sunglasses are designed to protect your eyes from sunlight, but some kinds protect your eyes better than others. Though tinted lenses are better than nothing, you should look for lenses that also block ultraviolet light.

Here at Family Eyecare Experts, We offer prescription sunglasses so you can see clearly while still protecting your eyes. We also offer lenses that will darken when you are outside so that you can see better. If you are looking for a pair of sunglasses, we can help.
